WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM DETAINED BY THE IMMIGRATION AUTHORITY IN THE AIRPORT? 👉

  • In detention, you have the right to an interview (Regulations of Mexican Immigration Law, article 42, fraction I).
  • You cannot remain detained in what is commonly known as the “little room” or the “bubble”, for more than 4 hours.
  • A legal document will be drawn up, where the immigration authority establishes the basis, reasons and documents that will authorize your entry into Mexico.
  • You can be referred to an immigration detention center to continue with your asylum application (Regulations of Mexican Immigration Law, article 62 fraction II).
  • The immigration authorities have the obligation to inform COMAR immediately of your intention to request asylum in Mexico (Regulations of Mexican Immigration Law, article 64).

  • Remember: Travelling with the help of “coyotes” (smugglers) can be unsafe, as you are exposed to the possibility of being abandoned, or of being detained by the border patrol when you cross the borders of different countries. Even worse, you could become the victim of organized crime.
