Prepare my trip to Mexico

Visa for humanitarian reasons in Mexico:

What are the requirements to process the visa for humanitarian reasons in Mexico?

The requirements depend on the humanitarian cause for which you request the immigration document, whether it is for family ties or public interest. Usually, a passport or country of origin ID, an INM format, plus the document that supports the humanitarian reason is required.

This applies in the following cases:

  • The offended, victim or witness of a crime committed in Mexico: public document issued by the competent authority (Public Prosecutor’s Office, Court or Tribunal, Executive Commission for the Attention to Victims) from which the quality of offended, victim or witness of a crime is derived.
  • Asylum seeker: proof of asylum application issued by the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees
  • Risk to health or life: medical certificate issued by a public health institution where the motives and reasons that justify the permanence are exposed
  • Assistance to an immediate family member in serious health condition: medical certificate from a health institution proving the serious state of health of an immediate family member and documents proving kinship
  • Child or teenager.

What benefits provided by the visa for humanitarian reasons?

  • The visa or card for humanitarian reasons allows the person to be in Mexico from 180 days to 1 year and includes a work permit.
  • In general, this document allows transit throughout the country, as well as entering and leaving Mexico, unless it is obtained because you are an asylum seeker. In that case, it does not allow transit through Mexico or to leave the country.
  • In all cases you are entitled to a work permit (although the card does not expressly say so) and it also includes a Unique Population Registration Code (CURP).

How to renew the visa for humanitarian reasons?

It can be renewed up to 30 calendar days before the document expires. It requires presenting a passport or identity document of the country of origin and verifying that the cause that motivated the issuance of the visa remains, that is, the medical certificate, proof of asylum, etc.
