Ask for asylum

What is the visitor鈥檚 card, based on humanitarian reasons 馃憠

It is a document to which every immigrant has a right, and that you can request from the National Institute of Migration (INM) if you find yourself in one of the following situations:

  • You are an unaccompanied child or adolescent
  • You were the victim or witness to a crime in Mexico
  • You are in the process of requesting recognition as a refugee with COMAR
  • The process is free
  • It allows you to obtain legal immigration status in Mexico
  • It is normally valid for one year
  • It carries with it the implicit right to a work permit
  • It allows you to travel freely throughout the country (however, with COMAR you are required to not leave the state in which requested recognition as a refugee)
  • It cannot be renewed unless you are still in the process of requesting recognition as a refugee when your status expires
  •

How can I request a visitor card for humanitarian reasons?

If you are an asylum seeker with COMAR, you can approach that institution and they will fill out a form and request from you the following documentation, to be presented at the INM office closest to your home. If you are in Mexico City this office is located at:聽Avenida Homero 1832, Polanco, Los Morales Polanco, 11510 Ciudad de M茅xico, CDMX.聽Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 1:00 pm, with the following documents:

    • Original and copy of the registration of your process, requesting recognition as a refugee.
    • Original and copy of your passport or current identification document.
    • Proof of address (if you don鈥檛 have this proof, you can go to COMAR and ask for a document to present to the INM office).
